PIPES, MES Sodium & HEPES – Good’s Buffers
PIPES, MES and HEPES are among the twelve biological buffers selected by Norman Good, otherwise known as Good’s Buffers.
PIPES is the common name for piperazine-N,N′-bis(2-ethanesulfonic acid), a frequently used buffering agent in biochemistry. PIPES Sodium is 1,4-Piperazinediethanesulfonic acid sodium salt, Piperazine-N,N′-bis(2-ethanesulfonic acid) sodium salt with a useful pH range of 6.1 - 7.5.
MES Sodium is 2-(N-Morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid sodium salt and 4-Morpholineethanesulfonic acid sodium salt. It has a useful pH range of 5.5 - 6.7.
HEPES is the common name for (4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid ), a Zwitterionic organic chemical buffering agent. HEPES is widely used in cell culture because it is better at maintaining physiological pH despite changes in carbon dioxide concentration (produced by cellular respiration) when compared to bicarbonate buffers, which are also commonly used in cell culture. HEPES Sodium is 4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)piperazine-1-ethanesulfonic acid sodium salt and N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N'-(2-ethanesulfonic acid) sodium salt. It has a useful pH range of 6.8 - 8.2.
More Biological Buffers
MOPS Sodium is the buffer’s popular name for the compound 3-(N-morpholino) propanesulfonic acid. MOPS Sodium is an excellent buffer for many biological systems at near-neutral pH. MOPS Buffer is most frequently used as a buffering agent in biology and biochemistry.
Tris Hydrochloride or Tromethamine HCl is used as an intermediate for the preparation of surface active agents, vulcanization accelerators and pharmaceuticals. Tris Hydrochloride has a pH range of 3.5 - 5.0. Tris Hydrochloride is extensively used in biochemistry and molecular biology. In biochemistry, Tris Hydrochloride is widely used as a component of buffer solutions.
Guanidine Hydrochloride (Guanidine HCI) is a crystalline compound of strong alkalinity formed by the oxidation of guanine.
TRIS also known as Trizma® is a biological buffer solution commonly used in molecular biology. Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane. Trizma is a registered trademark of Sigma-Aldrich Biotechnology LP and Sigma-Aldrich Co.Trizma HCl is Tris Hydrochloride
